The cliff face jutted out unevenly; like a makeshift Mount Rushmore made up of forgotten faces.
Climber’s Cove was notorious; no climber had ever returned.
Nobody knew why.
Claude chipped away at the rock as he climbed; until the rock chipped back.
The cliff face opened and swallowed Claude whole.
It’s a trip back down horror for this week’s Fifty Word Fiction. I was scrolling through my notes and found this opening line I’d written down a while ago. I’m happy to have found a home for it with The Cliff.
I recently finished Stephen King’s short story collection You Like It Darker which scared the hell out of me with some of his stories but I enjoyed it nonetheless, so it feels fitting to put out a horror this week. Thanks to
for recommending it via his Substack. If you don’t subscribe to Dan’s Delibration’s be sure to go over and subscribe! The penultimate episode of SEARCH is out now ahead of it’s two-part finale over the next few weeks. I’m excited to finish Season One of SEARCH and Season Two won’t be too far behind. I may pepper a few new short stories I’ve been working on in between Season One and Season Two though.
As always, thank you for subscribing and reading the stories here at Toasted Fiction. It means a great deal!

Love this! Original and frightening, a perfect piece of micro fiction.
Well, now we know why no climber ever returned.
